When a death occurs, life for those who live on changes forever. The Church recognizes this change and offers hope and comfort to those who grieve the loss of a loved one. As Jesus comforted Mary and Martha, the parish community can reach out to comfort those who mourn.

Martha Burke Tressler is the Bereavement Ministry Coordinator. There are various ways ministry to the bereaved can be implemented. The Bereavement Ministry Office can consult with parishes to discern the needs they wish to address. Click here to contact Martha.

We offer training and educational opportunities for parish personnel who wish to work with bereaved persons.

Volunteer Training
Using material updated in 2006 from the National Catholic Ministry to the Bereaved, individuals and/or entire parish teams are trained to assist clergy and parish staff to manage outreach and care for grieving parishioners. The National Catholic Ministry to the Bereaved is the only bereavement organization recognized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Parish Consulting
If your parish wants to offer assistance to the bereaved and you'd like help getting started, please call the Bereavement Ministry. We can help you begin a parish based bereavement ministry.

Counseling Referrals
The Bereavement Ministry Coordinator has a list of professional counselors and psychologists who are qualified to assist the grieving person. We also maintain a list of self-help and support groups.

Enrichment
We have numerous books and some video resources which can be borrowed.

Spiritual Support
Bereavement ministers who are looking for spiritual enrichment are encouraged to call the Bereavement Ministry. We have resources which may be helpful.
